MEMPHIS HOLIDAY CHESS FESTIVAL

 SCHOLASTIC (K-12) TEAM & INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT

Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 – Memphis, TN

(Open to all Scholastic Chess players Grades K-12)

5-Round Swiss, G/30

(5 total games will be played--each opponent has 30 minutes to complete his game; NO ELIMINATION, everyone will play all 5 games).  Individual & Team competition will be played simultaneously.

Both USCF-Rated and Non-Rated Sections Available for Individual Players; Teams must play in a USCF-Rated Section. 

LOCATION:

                The Clark Opera Memphis Center

  6745 Wolf River Pkwy., Memphis, TN 

        (Site is near the Poplar/Kirby intersection) 

 SECTIONS:

Note:  Reserve Sections are not rated and do not require USCF membership; All other sections are rated and require USCF membership, which may be purchased on site (see details below).

NOTE:  Individuals who will also play on a team MUST register as an individual in a rated section, as teams will only be allowed to play in rated sections.     

 

Each section must have at least 6 players or section will be combined.

 

TEAM INFO:

 

Teams consist of a minimum of 3 or more players from the same school or home school district.  More than 3 players may be on a team, but only the top 3 scores will count for the final team score.  Team and individual games are played simultaneously.

 

SPECIAL for ALL Cajun Chess tournaments:   As always, EVERY  Scholastic Player will receive a FREE chess gift.

Comfort Inn & Suites, 7787 Wolf River Blvd., Germantown, TN  38138.  Phone:  901-757-7800 (Queens-$69; Kings-$75; Doubles-$85).  Reserve by Sept. 15 and mention Cajun Chess to get special rate.  Hotel is approximately 1.5 mi. from the tournament site.

 

TIME:

First round will begin at 9 a.m.  Lunch break after 3rd round (about 12 noon) – Lunch and snacks available on site.  Awards ceremony immediately after completion of last round -- everything should end at approximately 3 p.m. 

 

PRIZES:

Trophies awarded to the top 5 individual winners in each section (in both rated & non-rated sections) and to the top 3 teams in each section; medals to all non-trophy winners.

  

BYES (1/2-point):
Available for any Round.  Limit one bye per player.

 

TIEBREAKS:

USCF-recommended computer tiebreaks will decide trophy and medal placements for all winners in scholastic sections, if necessary.

 

ENTRY FEE:

Entry fee is $15 for Individuals if received by Dec.. 10th; after Dec. 10th and on-site the Entry Fee is $20 for all.

If you wish to mail in your entry with a check (or credit card info), please be sure to include the player's name, full address, phone, email contact, grade (just completed) and, if applicable, USCF I.D. number.

  

ON-SITE-REGISTRATION:

You may register on-site between 8 - 8:30 a.m. the day of the tournament.  The first round will start at 9 a.m. 

 

USCF MEMBERSHIP:

One-year memberships in the U.S. Chess Federation for rated tournament play are as follows:

 

12 years of age and under (Scholastic Membership) -- $17 (includes 6 issues of the magazine "Chess Life for Kids").

 

15 years of age and under (Youth Membership) -- $19 (includes 6 issues of "Chess Life" magazine).

 

24 years of age and under (Young Adult Membership) -- $25 (includes 12 issues of "Chess Life" magazine).

 

MISCELLANEOUS:
Please bring boards, sets & clocks, if possible--none will be provided - Chess Vendor (Cajun Chess) will be on site.

 

Lunch break after Round 3 (around 12 noon -- lunch and snacks throughout the day will be available for purchase on site) and other rounds will immediately follow.  Awards ceremony will be held after the last Round.

 

USCF Tournament rules (i.e., touch-move rule) will be enforced for all sections.  If a player knows chess notation, it is highly recommended that he notate his games.
