CAMP FORMAT & INFO:

This course was designed for young players (6-11 years old) who want to improve their chess skills.  Mr. Pierson's Chess Camp promises a solid week of hands-on training from a noted and accomplished scholastic instructor.  Class size is restricted so that each student receives indiviual direction and guidance.

Each class includes a mid-morning and mid-afternoon break and lunch period (players will need to bring their own lunch).  By the end of the week, students should have improved their skills in the opening, middle and end game.

Class is divided into three distinct sections.  The first part of each class will be a laboratory on the opening game.  Students will learn one or two new openings each day to spring on their opponents.

After a mid-morning break, students will concentrate on chess tacatics and end game play.  In this segment, students will learn to look for common themes or situations which lead to a tactical play.  Also, Mr. Pierson will drill the students individually to make sure they know how to force a win with the slightest winning advantage.

In the afternoon session, students will play against each other in tournament and match play formats.  In these afternoon tournaments, students will be required to play the opening they learned that day.

For more information, call William Hebert at De La Salle High School, 504-895-5717, ext. 124 (Voice-mail is available; please leave your name and phone number).
